New Age, Spiritual Bondage, and Deliverance

New Age, Spiritual Bondage, and Deliverance

It’s unfortunate how many valuable spiritual principles from the Bible are missing—or distorted—in the New Age movement. During my time in that world, I often thought, “I swear this is all in the Bible.” And it is! But at the time, I had never truly read it. I was in such a state of confusion and deception that opening the Bible felt out of reach.

That’s not accidental. I believe Satan works strategically to hide God’s Word from those caught up in the New Age. He wants to keep people away from the one true God, robbing them of the discernment they need to recognize his lies.

“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”— 2 Corinthians 11:14

For those who left Christianity for the New Age, I don’t say this with judgment. I can only assume they didn’t yet have a true relationship with God and Jesus—or they simply weren’t ready for it at the time. I trust in God’s plan for each of us. My prayer is that, in the end, many will return to Him after they’ve grown enough to see the truth.

The Bondage of False Light

Many of my own spiritual experiences now echo stories from the Bible—especially the story of the Exodus. In it, the Israelites were held in bondage in Egypt for hundreds of years. The Pharaohs subjected them to brutal labor before God sent Moses to lead them out.

“Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.”— Genesis 15:13

The first time I heard the word bondage, I immediately thought of my time in the Korean spiritual organization I was part of. In that group, we were treated like slaves. Others who have left have said the same. If they said jump, we jumped. We worked for them day and night. We were expected to be blindly loyal—and to revere the founder. Occasionally, he would tell us not to worship him, but that was just part of the gaslighting.

Like the Egyptians whipping the Israelites, the higher-level “masters” whipped us spiritually—through control, fear, manipulation, and exhaustion. You might wonder why I stayed. But the truth is, I felt completely trapped. Even after I managed to get out, it took years to undo what had been done to me. Still, once I realized what had happened, I made it my life’s mission to break free.

God’s Purpose in the Wilderness

Spiritual bondage doesn’t always mean we are simply victims—sometimes God allows it for a reason. In the Israelites’ case, their time in Egypt was also a time of growth. What began as a small family of people became a nation.

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done.”— Genesis 50:20

And likewise for me, God had a plan! Looking back, I can actually see the signs—how God had intended for me to go through those experiences so I could write this blog. He wanted me to help bring people back to His truth.

Although I’d love to say I’m already fully there, I’ll save that for another day. What I can say is that I’m beginning to walk in freedom—as I develop a new relationship with God and Jesus, and deepen my faith in His truth and protection. It doesn’t happen overnight, but I know it’s only a matter of time.

The New Age Trap

Not all bondage is overt. In the New Age, it often begins subtly—usually with a spiritual teacher or healer promising healing, growth, and purpose. They lure you in with beautiful language and the promise of relief from your suffering.

“This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.”— 2 Thessalonians 2:9–10

Soon, you’ve adopted an entire belief system. You start worshipping false idols. You rely on psychics, rituals, angel numbers, and synchronicities that seem spiritual—but are not all from God.

You may even have spiritual experiences that feel powerful—but they are deceptive. I know, because I’ve been there. Eventually, it leads to spiritual exhaustion, confusion, and oppression by unseen forces. That’s when the questioning begins for some of us.

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”— Leviticus 19:31

Deliverance Through Christ

When you wake up to the deception of the New Age and decide to welcome Jesus into your heart, you may enter a period of intense spiritual warfare. But as you cling to Him and grow in your faith, you will be delivered.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”— John 8:32

I’m living proof that no matter how far you’ve gone into darkness, Jesus can bring you out. There is freedom. There is healing. And there is a future.

Unfortunately, some people are so utterly committed to deifying themselves—and have invested so much of their time, money, heart, mind, and body—that they may never be able to break free. That breaks my heart, but ultimately, I trust that is between them and God.

🤍 Closing Thoughts

If you find yourself caught in spiritual confusion or deception, know that you are not alone—and you are not beyond rescue. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is mighty to save and tender in His mercy. The same God who delivered the Israelites from bondage can and will deliver you too, when you turn to Him.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
