Why New Age Concepts Like Past Lives and Karma Are Not of God

Updated: May 12, 2025

When I first stepped into the New Age over 12 years ago, two of the first concepts I encountered were past lives and karma. These teachings are deeply woven into New Age spirituality and can seem fascinating — even empowering — at first. But in time, I came to see that they are not only unbiblical but spiritually dangerous.

The Illusion of Enlightenment

The belief in past lives teaches that we have lived many lifetimes — often not just on Earth, but sometimes even on other planets (depending on how far out your journey goes!). You’re told that you carry unresolved karma from these countless lives and that it's your spiritual duty to “clear” it.

You may even be told that you're responsible for the karma of your ancestors, and that by “clearing” it, you are some kind of brave savior — a spiritual hero rewriting your family line and raising the collective consciousness of humanity.

Sounds noble, right?

But it’s actually a trap.

The Problem with Past Life Readings

Here’s the reality: you go to a “past life” reader, and they tell you who you were and what you did. Often, the message is that you were a terrible person in some life, and now you have to work through the consequences — consequences you don’t remember, had no say in, and can’t verify. And now you have new shame to carry, on top of the shame you already have.

You’ve just handed over your power — and often your identity — to a stranger. Someone who may not know where their information comes from. Someone who may not even be aware of what spiritual forces they are operating under.

The reality is that these “readings” are filtered through human minds, shaped by bias, ego, deception, or even spiritual influence. And worse, you just gave them permission to change your entire perception of yourself.

This is not harmless. It can rewire how you view your life, your past, and your worth.

In the New Age, the idea of “clearing karma” can become a lifelong burden — a never-ending loop of shame, striving, and spiritual exhaustion. And depending on the people you surround yourself with, that shame can either be subtle or all-consuming.

Some more perceptive teachers even refer to these memories as “implanted stories” or “implanted memories.” In other words, they may be false — yet still powerful, if you believe them.

The enemy of our souls is a deceiver. Genesis 3:13: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9–10: “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing...”

What the Bible Actually Says

Nowhere in the Bible is the concept of past lives or reincarnation affirmed. In fact, the Bible teaches quite clearly:

Hebrews 9:27: “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”

There is no cycle of reincarnation. We get one life. One opportunity to turn to God, to choose truth, to walk in the light.

Yes, the Bible does speak of consequences for actions — a kind of spiritual cause and effect — but not in the karmic sense. Instead, Scripture says:

Galatians 6:7: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

This means that our choices do matter. Our actions have consequences. But — and this is critical — the Bible also emphasizes grace, mercy, and redemption through Jesus Christ.

Through sincere repentance and faith, anyone can be forgiven and made new. You are not bound by some endless chain of spiritual debt. Jesus died to break that chain.

Freedom in Christ, Not Fear

You don’t need to live under the weight of karma or dig through imagined past lives to be made whole.

2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

God isn’t asking you to carry the burden of a thousand former selves. He is asking you to come as you are — to repent, believe, and receive the freedom that only Jesus offers.

If you're emerging from the New Age and wrestling with these ideas, I want you to know: You are not crazy. You are not alone. And you don’t have to carry this shame any longer.

Jesus already carried it — and left it at the cross.

🕊️ A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,Thank You for being a God of truth, mercy, and light. Thank You for opening my eyes to deception and for calling me out of confusion and into clarity through Your Word. Lord, I repent of the times I sought identity, healing, and purpose apart from You. I renounce the false ideas and burdens I once carried — the shame, the striving, and the spiritual bondage of teachings that did not come from You.

Jesus, I believe You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I believe You died for my sins and rose again so I could walk in freedom and be made new. I give You my heart, my past, my future — and I trust You alone to heal, redeem, and guide me.

Holy Spirit, fill every space in me that was once occupied by lies. Lead me in truth, ground me in Your peace, and protect me from every false spirit and voice that would try to deceive again. Thank You for Your patience and Your grace. I choose to follow You — not the voice of the world, not the New Age, not my own understanding — but You alone.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
