New Age “Light” is Not the Real Deal

I was not raised in church, but when I was in college, I was baptized. My mom asked me if I wanted to be baptized, and I said yes without hesitation. So, I was baptized—very dramatically, I might add—on Lake Kachess on a stormy, gray, and windy day with choppy waves on the lake. I don’t remember every detail, but I do remember making my declarations to Jesus. Looking back now, I believe that moment was pivotal—because when I later joined a New Age spiritual group, I was already asking, “Where does Jesus fit into all of this?”

They would scoff at me and refuse to answer. A few days later, one of the group leaders made a snide comment about “Christians,” saying it with a tone that carried more than just mockery—it was spiritual contempt. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what was happening. Now I know they were trying to stir up ego attachments so I’d release them under the guise of “enlightenment.” Or was it just preparing me to be a rebel against God?

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”1 Corinthians 1:18

Shortly after my informal “initiation” into the group, the veils between the natural and spiritual realms dropped quickly. As someone who’s always been energetically sensitive, it became very intense. Almost immediately, I received from God the gift of discernment of spirits. But at the time, I didn’t understand what it was—I only knew I was overwhelmed. The spiritual realm opened up around me in a way that felt like I was on drugs, even though I’d never used any. It was a decade-long flood of chaos and confusion.

In the New Age, having spiritual sensitivity without biblical grounding is incredibly dangerous. The enemy will twist and manipulate any God-given gift, especially if you don’t know the Word of God. For example, when I discerned that something or someone was influenced by darkness, I was told, “That’s your shadow,” or “That’s your ego.” See what happens? That lie immediately neutralizes the discernment. You stop trusting what you perceive and instead internalize every dark thing as if it were coming from you.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness…”Isaiah 5:20
“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.”2 Corinthians 11:14–15

In that state, nothing felt real. I kept saying, “Well, I saw this… and felt that… but I don’t believe it. It was just a manipulation.” Everything felt distorted. I couldn’t stop using that word—manipulation—because that’s what it all was. Lies layered upon lies, wrapped in beautiful energy and dressed up as truth.

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”1 Corinthians 14:33

After years of trying to make sense of the swirling spiritual input around me, I now see it clearly: what some call the “New Age Light Grid” is a counterfeit. It is real in the sense that it has power, frequency, and spiritual effect—but it is not the real deal. It is not the light of Christ.

When I began turning to the light of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—everything changed. It didn’t happen overnight. But slowly, as I surrendered my life to Jesus and came into agreement with His Word, the feeling of constant manipulation and confusion lifted. I found peace.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”John 14:6
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”John 1:5
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”Ephesians 5:8

What is the Discernment of Spirits?

Let’s take a moment to explain this gift that God gave me—and maybe has given you too.

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is called discernment of spirits. It is a supernatural ability to perceive what kind of spirit is operating behind a person, teaching, situation, or even a spiritual experience. This can include the Holy Spirit, human motivations (the flesh), and demonic spirits.

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good… to another discerning of spirits…”1 Corinthians 12:7,10

This gift is crucial in a time where deception is rampant. It is meant to help the Body of Christ distinguish truth from error and walk in spiritual safety. It’s not about judgment or suspicion—it’s about clarity.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”1 John 4:1

When you're in the New Age or surrounded by spiritual counterfeits, this gift can get misused or reinterpreted. I was constantly told that anything I sensed as “dark” was just me projecting my own issues. This not only invalidated the gift—it weaponized it against me. Instead of helping me walk in truth, it kept me in confusion and self-doubt.

But the Bible calls us to test everything—not blindly accept it, not surrender to it. We are to examine spirits, reject evil, and hold fast to what is good:

“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”1 Thessalonians 5:19–22

Once I came under the protection of the Holy Spirit and the truth of Scripture, discernment became clear. It brought peace, not panic. It gave me confidence in God, not fear of what I was perceiving. I was no longer manipulated—I was anchored.

Final Thoughts

If you're someone who has been walking through the chaos of spiritual confusion, or you’ve been told your sensitivity is just your “ego,” I want to tell you: You are not crazy. You may have a gift from God that needs to be brought under His authority and guided by His Word.

The New Age light is a counterfeit. But the light of Christ is real, pure, healing, and holy. When you follow Jesus, you won’t need to decode spiritual symbols or second-guess every impression. His Spirit will guide you into truth, not illusion.

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth…”John 16:13

If you’re ready to renounce the false light and come into the truth of Jesus, just call on His name. He is waiting with open arms to show you what is real.

🕊️ Closing Prayer: From False Light to the True Light

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with an open heart. I confess that I have sought light and truth in places outside of You. I have been deceived by what looked beautiful, but left me confused, empty, and bound.

Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I repent for participating in any practice, belief, or system that is not of You. I renounce every false light and every spirit that is not from the Holy Spirit. I reject all counterfeit spiritual experiences, and I break agreement with every lie I have believed.

Jesus, wash me clean with Your blood. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit—the true Spirit of Truth—and renew my mind. Teach me how to discern rightly, according to Your Word, and not the world. Help me walk in clarity, peace, and spiritual safety under Your covering.

Thank You for never leaving me, even when I was wandering. Thank You for opening my eyes and calling me back to You. Today, I receive You fully as my Lord and Savior. I surrender everything to You.

Lead me in Your light, Jesus.

Your light is the only light I want to follow. In Your holy name I pray,

Amen.
